Byzantine Ring - Gold / Silver with Quartz - 9th - 11th Century A.D. - SOLD

SOLD !

Authentic Ancient Byzantine Ring - Gold / Silver with green Quartz - 9th - 11th Century A.D.

This is an authentic Byzantine ring made of bronze, silver & gold, decorated with a quartz stone.

This ring has been dated to the 9th. - 11th. century A.D. thus making it between 900 and 1100 years old!

The ring has been sympathetically restored. When it arrived at the workshop, straight from the dig site, it was as black as the remains seems on the inside of the band.

The subject has been carefully conserved to reveal as much as possible of the original details.

The silver band has a central rib of bronze which has been plated with gold (good remains can still be seen).

Below the bezel on both sides are 2 rope circles in silver with 3 nodules of silver below it.

Above these are details of 2 semi-circular insets of gold.

The bezel has been formed from hollow silver in the shape of a box (2 small cracks can be seen on the worn corners).

The clasp has remains of what we believe to be green quartz. We are unsure of the nature of the stone due to age and wear.

A GREAT example of medieval / Dark Ages artwork!

Everybody can go to the shopping mall and simply pick a new piece of jewelry out of enormous stocks of freshly made items but how many of you have ever given (or gotten!) a present to a near or dear one with such history embedded into it, such character, the patina of 900 years battling the elements and so unique that there is truely only ONE of it in the world?

A CELESTIAL DESIGN!!!

This ring was found at a Roman site in Ancient Thracia and dates from around 100 - 300 A.D.

This ring features a "classic" flat bezel in a style commonly known as the "diamond-lobe" style with a marvelously engraved motif.

It is the VERY FIRST time that I have ever seen this decoration on this ring type.

This design is usually done on rings with round bezels.

The design is SUPER and is of a 8 pointed star inside of a crescent moon and both of them sailing across the night sky.

Sometimes these designs refer to a specific place and on some occasions they refer to a specific celestial event or a day of the year when such an event will occur which is quite exciting from an astronomical or astrological point of view.

There are also curved lines forming an outlining circle around the bezel face and they may just be an outline but they are most likely a "Sun" symbol which is very exciting.

There are also some nice sized lobes on each shoulder of the ring and the band is one of the thickest that I have seen on this ring-type as you can tell in the last picture of this ring.

The bright golden color and SUPER shine of this gem makes it a 1st Rate ring.

There are even some nice casting marks on the inside surfaces.

This is a super collectible for anyone interested in astronomy or astrology and is the BEST example of this type of ring that I have come across in a LONG time.

Just LOOK at the picture below and you will see just how THICK the band of this example is.

The color and shine of this ring are both 1st rate and my poor camera technique can't begin to capture the TRUE BEAUTY of this AMAZING ring.

Everybody can go to the shopping mall and simply pick a new piece of jewelry out of enormous stocks of freshly made items but how many of you have ever given (or gotten!) a present to a near or dear one with such history embedded into it, such character, the patina of 1700 years battling the elements and so unique that there is truely only ONE of it in the world?

This is an authentic Roman ring made of bronze.

This ring has been dated to the first to third century A.D. thus making it between 1700 and 2000 years old!

It is in very good, unrestored condition and was unearthed at a dig site in the ancient Roman province of Moesia which roughly corresponds to parts of Serbia and Bulgaria in the Balkan region, Eastern Europe, an area where the Romans often went to war to subdue the East Celts.

Holding this artefact in one's hands, one can almost feel the power, glory and might of the Roman Empire!

This is one noticeable ring, that's for sure!

This ring has a very large bezel with some nice engravings on it. The bezel is in the shape of a large shield that measures 11mm in diameter.

The design makes use of the traditional concentric circle with the deep central dot motif. While this decorating technique was used for magical purposes . There are five of the circles on this ring's bezel face.

These rings were originally made as votive rings to seek the aid of the gods and goddesses and in later period were bought in the hopes of warding off the "Evil Eye".

The number 5 is of special significance and is associated with "Mars" the God of War. It is interesting to note that in later years, the five circles would be put on the bezel in the shape of a Cross, instead of the way they look on a gambling die. When done as the Cross, it stands for the 5 Wounds of Christ and when they were done this way, for the God Mars. A coincidence?

The ring does have a definite decorative quality to it and will surely be noticed wherever it is worn.

It is in very good, unrestored condition and was unearthed at a dig site in the ancient Roman province of Moesia which roughly corresponds to parts of Serbia and Bulgaria in the Balkan region, Eastern Europe, an area where the Romans often went to war to subdue the East Celts.

Holding this artefact in one's hands, one can almost feel the power, glory and might of the Roman Empire!

Imagine that 1700 years ago, a Roman citizen had this ring commissioned and gave it to his beloved wife...

Wouldn't it be great if some 1700 years later, this process would be repeated?

We qualify this ring as medium restored and highly wearable.

It weighs 2.23 grams and has a diameter of some 15.75 mm which corresponds to a US size 5.

Possibly your local jeweler could resize it to make it fit perfectly.

PLEASE NOTE:
This is NOT a copy of any kind. This is an authentic 1700 year old piece!
