Authentic Ancient Roman Pendant of Osiris - Gold - 2nd. Century B.C. - 2nd. Century A.D.
This is a STUNNING authentic Roman pendant made of gold.
It has been dated to between the second century B.C. and the second century A.D. thus making it between 2200 and 2000 years old!
It is approximately 25 mm tall including the hoop and some 20 mm wide and weighs 2.02 grams.
It is in the form of a crescent moon decorated with a stylized shrine and granulate figure of the Egyptian god Osiris flanked by snakes.
It is in very good condition although the front is missing one of the three convex discs and the rear has suffered a little from having been buried for near 2 millenniums (!).
It comes from a private US-based collection.
It may seem odd at first glance to find an Egyptian god on a Roman pendant but the Roman and Egyptian cultures were very loosely knit. One only has to think of Julius Caesar and Cleopatra to form a picture of how close they were.
Holding this artifact in one's hands, one can almost feel the power, glory and might of the Roman Empire!
Everybody can go to the shopping mall and simply pick a new piece of jewelry out of enormous stocks of freshly made items but how many of you have ever given (or gotten!) a present to a near or dear one with such history embedded into it, such character, the patina of 2000 years battling the elements and so unique that there is truly only ONE of it in the world?
Imagine that over 2000 years ago, a Roman citizen had this commissioned and gave it to his beloved wife...
Wouldn't it be great if some 2 millenniums later, this process would be repeated?
