Authentic Ancient Roman Intaglio - Woman's Bust - Chalcedony - 3rd. Century A.D..
This is a STUNNING authentic Roman intaglio made out of chalcedony stone.
This intaglio has been dated to the third century A.D. thus making it 1700 years old!
It shows a noble woman facing left.
It is in EXCELLENT, original condition and was unearthed at a dig site in the ancient Roman province of Moesia which roughly corresponds to parts of Serbia and Bulgaria in the Balkan region, Eastern Europe, an area where the Romans often went to war to subdue the East Celts.
Although the surface has a little dulled over the centuries and has a couple of small chips but still shows good calcite details to the engraving.
The detail is wonderful as seen on the inprint.
Stunning stone tones to the red and purple stone.
Would have been made to be set in a silver / gold ring as a seal ring item for wax sealing.
It was common to show emperors, generals and animals.
This Intaglio could be set in a silver or gold ring.
Holding this artifact in one's hands, one can almost feel the power, glory and might of the Roman Empire!
Everybody can go to the shopping mall and simply pick a new piece of jewelry out of enormous stocks of freshly made items but how many of you have ever given (or gotten!) a present to a near or dear one with such history embedded into it, such character, the patina of 1700 years battling the elements and so unique that there is truly only ONE of it in the world?
Imagine that 1700 years ago, a Roman citizen had this intaglio commissioned to be set in a ring of his choice...
Wouldn't it be great if some 1700 years later, this process would be repeated and you would commission you local goldsmith to make you a ring featuring this 1700 years old artifact?
We qualify this intaglio as original, unrestored in excellent condition.
It weighs 1.39 grams.
